OVERVIEW:
The Luxor Hotel and Casino is hard to miss with its 30-story, black pyramid structure, guarded by a large replica of the ancient Egyptian Great Sphinx of Giza statue. Obviously, the resort has an Egyptian theme and is named after the ancient city in Egypt. With over 4,400 hotel rooms, the Luxor Hotel is the second largest hotel in Las Vegas and the third largest in the world. The top of the pyramid is home to the brightest spotlight beam in the world. The beam of light, measured at over 42.3 billion candle power, is rumored to be visible from outer space.
HISTORY:
Built by Circus Circus Enterprises, The Luxor was constructed in 18 months and was officially opened in the fall of 1993. The modest construction cost of $375 million was financed completely by Circus Circus. When the resort opened, it contained a theme park type of ride, called the Nile River Tour, which encircled the casino floor. In 1998, the Luxor expanded by adding two hotel towers, nearly doubling its hotel rooms. With Vegas returning to a more adult destination, the property underwent a major remodel in 2007. Much of the public areas, Egyptian decor and themed attractions, including the Nile River Tour, were replaced with modern lounges, adult bars and trendy clubs.
FACTS & TIDBITS:
1. Before Centra, the Luxor's casino bar was called Liquidity, a trendy bar and lounge area located in the same footprint. It featured a unique video projection system that projected video on a water canvas.

2. The McDonald's restaurant in the Luxor is one of only two in the world that sell Pepsi instead of Coke (Excalibur has the other one).

3. Guests staying on the outer walls of the Luxor pyramid travel from floor to floor on “inclinators”. These inclinators travel at 39-degree angles on the inner surface of the pyramid wall. Be very careful if you had too much to drink!

BARS:
Centra replaced Liquidity as the casino bar at Luxor. While we really liked Liquidity, Centra isn't a bad place for a quick drink. We just liked Liquidity more. Centra is located in the middle of the Pyramid and is surrounded by the casino floor. It's more open to the casino now, allowing the bar to absorb the energy of the casino. We were happy to see that Centra incorporated some very subtle Egyptian decor in keeping with the theme of the resort.
The Public House, an East Coast restaurant and bar chain, now in the Luxor shouldn't be confused with the Public House in the Venetian. They are two different places. The Luxor's Public House has a stronger sports bar feel to it. While it's considered more of a casual restaurant, the bar area is fairly large and has a fun atmosphere. If you're looking for a good spot to catch a game on this end of the Strip, this is it.
